Steady State Visual Evoked Potentials in the Delta Range (0.5-5 Hz)

چکیده
The usually ‘accepted’ limits of Steady State Visual Evoked Potentials are in the 3-60 Hz range. Recent studies reported SSVEP activities below 3 Hz, which remains a matter of debate. We recorded EEG responses to stimuli from 0.5 to 13 Hz. We first confirm the possibility to elicit SSVEP below 3 Hz. Afterwards, for the first time, we show that SSVEP recorded in the δ (0.5-5 Hz) range seem to describe several subsystems, with peaks near 1, 2.5 and 5 Hz (close to subharmonics of 10 Hz). Finally, we report surprising results in the lower frequency ranges, with responses for almost all harmonics (e.g. 15 peak responses between 0.5 and 14.5 Hz for stimuli at 1 hz).

Temporal Aspects of Contrast Visual Evoked Potentials in the Pigmented Rat: Effect of Dark Rearing
Cortical visual evoked potentials (VEPs) in response to gratings temporally modulated in counterphase were recorded in normal and dark-reared pigmented rats. Temporal modulation was either sinusoidal (0.25-15 Hz, steady state condition) or abrupt (0.5 Hz, transient condition). In normals, the amplitude spectrum of contrast VEPs has two peaks (at about 0.5 and 4 Hz) and a high temporal frequency...
متن کاملEmotional faces boost up steady-state visual responses for brain-computer interface.
Steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs) can be used successfully for brain-computer interfaces (BCI) with multiple commands and high information transfer rates. In this study, we investigated a novel affective SSVEP paradigm using flickering video clips of emotional human faces, and evaluated their performance in an 8-command BCI controlling a robotic arm in near real-time. Single-trial ...
متن کاملVisual evoked potential diagnosis of field defects in patients with chiasmatic and retrochiasmatic lesions.
Visual evoked potentials were studied in 18 patients with visual field defects assessed by perimetry. Stimuli were reversing checkerboard and grating patterns of 13', full field and hemifield. Two reversal rates were studied: 1 Hz (transient VEPs) and 8 Hz (steady-state VEPs). Using monocular hemifield stimulation the "paradoxical lateralisation" of transient but not of steady-state VEPs was co...
متن کاملComparison of multiple auditory steady-state responses (80 versus 40 Hz) and slow cortical potentials for threshold estimation in hearing-impaired adults.
This study evaluated the use of multiple auditory steady-state responses (ASSRs) and slow cortical potentials (SCPs) to estimate behavioural audiograms in adults for compensation cases. Two groups of 23 subjects were assessed using either 80 Hz or 40 Hz multiple simultaneous tones with carrier frequencies of 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0 kHz. SCP thresholds for 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 kHz were obtained for ...
متن کاملFace-Evoked Steady-State Visual Potentials: Effects of Presentation Rate and Face Inversion
Face processing can be explored using electrophysiological methods. Research with event-related potentials has demonstrated the so-called face inversion effect, in which the N170 component is enhanced in amplitude and latency to inverted, compared to upright, faces. The present study explored the extent to which repetitive lower-level visual cortical engagement, reflected in flicker steady-stat...
